East Point, New Jersey
The lantern atop the lightkeeper's house lends interest to this photogenic structure, situated in the Marshes
near the mouth of the Maurice River in New Jersey. Built in 1849, and originally called the Maurice River Lighthouse, the name was officially changed to East Point in 1912, probably to avoid confusion with the Maurice River Range Lights. Oystermen and other mariners had commonly referred to it as "East Point" long before the name change.

done before the structure was moved to its present location. The photograph shows it at its new site.

The kitchen in the brick lightkeeper's house originally doubled as an oil room until the brick oil house was added sometime between 1900-1901.
The light was turned off during World War II, and stayed dark until 1980, when the Maurice River Historical Society
persuaded the U.S. Coast Guard into turning on the light.
The exterior was restored by the Maurice River Historical Society after a fire, started by vandals, destroyed the roof and lanter room and extensively damaged the interior. As funds become available the MRHS expects to restore the interior and open it to the public.
Directions: A highway sign on Route 47 (Delsea Drive) near Heislerville identifies the turnoff to East Point. The
structure can be viewed either up close, or from a distance across the marshes.
